In an article posted on YouGov.com, it was revealed that approximately 54% of Americans read at least one book in 2023. The article also disclosed some interesting information concerning the ways Americans are reading.
“Americans who did read were more likely to read physical books. More than 40% of Americans read a physical book in 2023, compared to 21% who read an e-book and 19% who listened to an audiobook.”
I have been a reader since I was young. I realize that not everyone likes reading; some struggle to find it enjoyable. Regardless of people’s stance on reading, I believe it is important to read in some format. Here is my perspective on the matter:
Promoting Early Reading Is Vital
I started reading at a young age. Books were available to me, and reading was encouraged. I did the same with my children, and I believe this is crucial. While I understand children learn at different paces, consistent encouragement helps generate an interest in reading.
Reading Leads to Personal Growth
I once was asked how I knew so much about a specific subject. The answer was simple: I read. I would like to say I am some sort of genius, but that is not the case. Some books I read are enjoyable; they are what I would describe as an “easy read.” Others are not as simple, and I have labored through them because I had a desire to understand the content. (This is why I strive to write my books in a clear, easy-to-read manner.)
Writers Are Readers
I have never met a writer who was not first a reader. Whenever I prepare to work on a book project, I do some reading beforehand. Sometimes, I do this for days before I begin writing. This helps prepare the “flow” of my thoughts. I believe I am a better preacher and public speaker because I read and write. My thoughts are more organized and more fluidly delivered.
Technology Makes Reading Easier
Many have expressed to me the difficulty they find in reading. For various reasons, reading is not easy or enjoyable for them. One of the great benefits of our modern day is the variety of reading formats available—physical books, e-books, or audiobooks. While my preference is a physical book, I take advantage of every medium. This is one reason why I currently am building a recording studio. In addition to starting a podcast, I personally plan to record my books as audiobooks. Whatever your preference, decide to become a reader!
It has been said that readers are leaders. While not all readers are leaders, I would submit that every leader is a reader on some level. Whether for learning or leisure, let us strive to be part of the percentage of Americans who read a book this year.
